Constricted venous outflow: Does it alter cerebrospinal fluid dynamics?
نویسنده
چکیده
Clive Beggs University of Bradford Abstract Few topics in medicine have in recent years produced such controversy as chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI). Since this vascular syndrome was first identified in 2009 1 , it has divided opinion. On one extreme, are those who advocate that CCSVI causes multiple sclerosis (MS), while at the other end of the spectrum are those who deny that the syndrome exists at all. Consequently, the debate on CCSVI has become polarized – a situation, which all too easily, can result in a loss of objectivity.

The severity of chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency in patients with multiple sclerosis is related to altered cerebrospinal fluid dynamics.
Chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI) is a vascular picture that shows a strong association with multiple sclerosis (MS). The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between a Doppler cerebral venous hemodynamic insufficiency severity score (VHISS) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow dynamics in 16 patients presenting with CCSVI and relapsing-remitting MS (CCSVI-MS) an...
متن کاملSympathetic control of cerebral blood flow in dogs.
The effect of sympathetic stimulation on cerebral blood flow was investigated in dogs anesthetized with chloralose. A preparation has been developed for the moment-to-moment measurement of cerebral venous outflow with an electromagnetic flow transducer. The brain's arterial supply was left undisturbed. The sympathetic innervation of the cerebral vessels was stimulated at the stellate ganglion (...
متن کاملPrediction of the Jugular Venous Waveform using a Model of Cerebrospinal Fluid Dynamics
Background and Purpose: We have previously reported a model of cerebral hydrodynamics in the form of an equivalent electrical circuit. The aim of this work was to demonstrate that the model could predict venous flow patterns seen in the superior sagittal sinus, straight sinus and jugular vein in normal volunteers. Methods: An electrical equivalence model of cerebro-spinal fluid (CSF) and cerebr...

PURPOSE To investigate cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics in the aqueduct of Sylvius (AoS) in chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI)-positive and -negative healthy individuals using cine phase contrast imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fifty-one healthy individuals (32 CCSVI-negative and 19 age-matched CCSVI-positive subjects) were examined using Doppler sonography (DS). Diagnosis of...
متن کاملRAPID COMMUNICATIONS Venous and Cerebrospinal Fluid Flow in Multiple Sclerosis: A Case-Control Study
The prevailing view on multiple sclerosis etiopathogenesis has been challenged by the suggested new entity chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency. To test this hypothesis, we studied 21 relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis cases and 20 healthy controls with phasecontrast magnetic resonance imaging. In addition, in multiple sclerosis cases we performed contrastenhanced magnetic resonance a...
